The Simple Service Initiative
January 19, 2009
i did something yesterday that i don’t normally do…and really don’t like doing, at all. but i did it anyway. i gave a commercial in my sermon.
after taking a look at a story of jesus and the disciples in mark 10:35-46, i took some time to lay the foundation for “the simple service initiative”, our plan for spring break in a couple of months.

honestly, i think that taking time during the sermon to promote a program or a trip is a mistake. it cheats people who have come to be inspired by god’s word. it causes a disconnect with people who are unable to participate. they check out. i think it happened yesterday.
in spite of that, i’m totally excited about the prospect of the simple service initiative!
This is a site to talk about the sermon from this past week...a place to ask questions, to give opinions, to disagree, to encourage, to dig deeper, to seek truth, to offer criticism, to affirm trust, and to build commitment.
I'm up for it. Are you?

“Those” people probably need the simple service initiative more than they do a sermon. We are called to serve. Not sit in a church and listen to stories about people in the Bible serving.

didn’t bother me at all…in fact, just got my mind to racing and I look forward to being involved.
Are we going to do a press release on this?

I think it could go either way – some people might check out while some might check in, being glad to have found a place willing to serve. Either way, the project sounds great and necessary for the community – and for us.
